I've just seen the announcement (zenoss 4). Are there any improvements in its installer? I use Gentoo,  from some zenoss version it became difficult or impossible upgrading. The last version I managed to upgrade to is 3.1.0. Though there had been problems with upgrading before this version then I stuck at it. Are there plans to introduce the standard linux installation way (configure/make/make install)? That would help creating Gentoo portage ebuild.

According to the install docs for 4.2 you can upgrade if your version is 3.2.x.

I run Zenoss on Funtoo Linux (my project, a derivative of Gentoo Linux -- I'm also the Gentoo creator btw :) by running it within an OpenVZ container. Funtoo Linux has very good support for OpenVZ so if you are interested in doing this, it does work very well. OpenVZ allows you to basically run CentOS/RHEL on Gentoo.

Until full Gentoo/Funtoo integration exists, this is the best way to do it. But I will start working on Funtoo/Gentoo Zenoss integration when I'm able to get around to it.

Right now, the # of supported Linux platforms is low as we modernize our build process.

I see your point. It's strange however that nothing has changed for a few years in the installation process. It took me half a day or even more to upgrade zenoss every time I got a new version. Most of features I need exist in my 3.1.0 zenoss version so I'm  reluctant to change the things. But at some point I'l have to move to an alternative (may be it'l be nagios).
