I am adding a Linux server to monitor with Zenoss. It adds properly but I get this regarding SNMP: INFO zen.ZenDisc: SNMP monitoring off for Linuxserver. I am assuming it is never monitoring due to this error but from the linux machine itself I test snmp successfully and can snmpwalk from the Zenoss server to the server successfully. I am complete beginner when it comes to Zenoss and despite reading most of the documentation and some forum posts I am still having issues finding a resolution.

Any help is appreciated.

Okay, I got it to the point where it shows the components. Under the disk however it reads 0% used and 0% utilized. It does show the different mount points though.

Thanks!

which version of linux?

when you snmp walk the linux server do you see the disk stats?

Hi!

Could you try to run on the server, as zenoss user, the next command?

*zenperfsnmp run -v10 -d <devicename>*

Every SNMP data retrieval shows a line like the next:
2012-01-05 08:59:59,284 DEBUG zen.RRDUtil: /opt/zenoss/perf/Devices/<devicename>/os/filesystems/-/usedBlocks_usedBlocks.rrd: 1444020.0

If you don't find a line related to filesystems, could you post the output of the command?

Hope it helps!

Several checks:

- On this command, are you correctly specifying the device name as the devicename, not the +title+ of the device?
- Is the device allocated in a customized device class organizer? In that case, are there monitoring templates associated to the organizer? (in case it's not, you can override/copy templates from other organizers to your new organizer, on advanced/Monitoring Templates)
- Is the device in a production state?
- Is the zProductionThreshold value other than 300 on the device class organizer containing the device?

You say your device shows components, so Zenoss is able to talk via SNMP to the device. Communication ZenossSNMP-Device is granted.

If the device is correctly specified on your command, then there are two possibilities:
1- Your device is listed in "2012-01-05 09:33:47,802 DEBUG zen.zenperfsnmp: unresponsive devices: [omitted list of devices]"
2- Your device does not have any template associated, so... there are no SNMP queries to ask to that device.

Keep me posted! :)

Thanks for the follow-up.

- The command I am running is against the actual hostname of the machine.
- I am not sure what you mean by this. I have two monitoring templates assigned to thsi device. (Device (/Server/Linux) and FileSystem (/Server/Linux).
-Yes it is in production state.
-zProductionThreshold value is 300.

Yes I see several components: IP Services, Network Routes, Interfaces, etc.
1. The device is not listed in that list of omitted devices.
2. As above, there are two templates associated with the device.

Hope this helps shed some light.

Thanks again!

The actual hostname is not necessarily the id... If you get into the device via web interface, on the url you will see the id of it just after "devices/"... If the id and the hostname are the same then the zenperfsnmp call is correct and some other thing should be wrong.

About template, im not sure if i got it right, but i understood you meant the template is shown on the device details (left panel once you've clicked on the device). Well, it shouldn't.
Only in that case, i would unassociate (delete) the template Filesystem from the device and make sure Filesystem is applied to its deviceclass organizer. It should be shown with an asterisk icon, as a Component template.

were u using a custom organizer? If that's the case, could you also try to move the device to a standard organizer (server/linux) and try again (with zenperfsnmp you see instantly if it works, rather than waiting some cycles for its data to get graphed on the UI)

If we don't get it working, we could meet at Irc sometime and have a better look at it.

Bye!

rhubarb -

Your debug output has:

2012-01-05 09:33:47,786 DEBUG zen.zenperfsnmp: Fetching configs for 0 devices

My guess is that 'app3' is not the devicename that zenoss is using.  When you are looking at the device in the URL of your browser you will see '/zport/dmd/Devices/Server/Linux/mydevicename'

That is the devicename you have to give zenperfsnmp when running it from the command line.  Can you verify you are using the right device name and rerun zenperfsnmp run -v10?

I'm not sure if you renamed the device after loading it into Zenoss, but when renaming a device use the "Rename Device" option that is in the gear menu in the lower left of the screen.  Simply changing the device name on the overview screen does not change the device name as Zenoss uses it but simply changes what the UI shows.

Dennis,

'/zport/dmd/Devices/Server/Linux/mydevicename' reads '/zport/dmd/Devices/Server/Linux/devices/App3'

I named the server APP3 when I first added the device but the server's hostname is APP3 and I named it the same way. I ran zenperfsnmp run -v10 - what am I looking for after I run that command?

In other news, I've added File System monitoring for a Windows server and the same thing happens. The Used/Free/Util is at 0.000.

Luizzmizz -

Not sure which post you are referring to but I think I'm responding to the right one.

This is not an issue of hostname vs device name. It happens on every Linux and Windows machine I am monitoring and I have confirmed this is not it.

I see the Monitoring Template once I click on a device. I select a Windows server under Monitoring Template I see Device (/Server/Windows) as that is the template binded to the device.

I am not using a customer organizer and I'm not sure I know what that is but it sounds like "standard organizer" is "monitoring template"

Does anyone know if there is a way to reset monitoring templates to factory default? Is the data source to monitor disk space for windows default in the /Server/Windows monitoring template?

mwcotton,

That is correct, but was resolved by my second post. I have included a screenshot of the issue below.

As you can see the Used Bytes, Free Bytes, and % Util is 0.00B and Unknown respectively. I am going to test to see if the thresholds work at all and if it will still notify me despite this.

Thanks
