So i am trying to follow upgrade documentation to get from 3.2.1 to 4.2.3. an upgrade that the doc says is possible. ( http://iweb.dl.sourceforge.net/project/zenoss/Documentation/zenoss-4.2.x-docs/zendocs-4.2.3/Zenoss_Core_Installation_01-012013-4.2-v09.pdf http://iweb.dl.sourceforge.net/project/zenoss/Documentation/zenoss-4.2.x-docs/zendocs-4.2.3/Zenoss_Core_Installation_01-012013-4.2-v09.pdf )

I cannot find an FTP link for zenoss files, to find the i686 architecture RPM. Zenoss website is so poorly designed I can never find anything! does anyone know where the file is for 4.2.3 i686  RPM version?

I am using a centos 5 virtual appliance.

the error i get when trying the upgrade is "cannot add package zenoss_core-4.2.3.el5.x86_64.rpm to transaction. Not a compatible architecture: x86_64"

I have bad news. While you can upgrade from 3.2.1 to 4.2.x, it's 64 bit. See:
http://community.zenoss.org/blogs/zenossblog/2012/04/27/32-bit-os-support-deprecation http://community.zenoss.org/blogs/zenossblog/2012/04/27/32-bit-os-support-deprecation

Now, all is not lost, but you will need to read up on converting your RRD files to 64 bit if you want to keep them, and you'll need to set up a new server running EL6  x64...

You can use

rrdtool dump rrdfile.rrd
to export the RRD data and on the new 64 bit install

rrdtool restore rrdfile.rrd
to import it back in. Google provides some scrip examples you can build on (though for other RRD tool systems like Cactii) to do the migration en masse.

You can then do a normal migration otherwise.

Aw crap. They should put that info in the documentation. I think most people using VM would be in the same boat.

Thanks

I guess I am starting over from scratch with zenoss YET AGAIN. Or more probably sitting on our old version till a show stopping bug forces an upgrade.

I am not sure what RRD is really, all I would really want to preserve is my machines and all the info we have put into the system. I suppose there is no backup / restore documentation or by hand migration proceedure, otherwise one would think it would be in the above document.

You may want to start clean with v 4 anyway as it's so different from earlier versions.

For what you want, you might need to clarify - if you don't need the graphs you can just leave them behind by deleting the rrds on the new server after a zenbackup / zenrestore.  v3 -> v4 drops events in any case. Depending on how much time or money you want to put into this, you can work via forums and IRC on the migration, or hire a consultant to do it for you. It certainly can be done - just most people switched to 64 bit with the advent of v3... so wouldn't have both humps at the same time.

remote:

I PM'd you about this work. For your case you'll probably want a consult, there's a few caveats that have to be worked around.

Best,
