"Unable to configure HTTP monitoring"

I am trying to use Zenoss to monitor my websites. I have installed the HTTP zenpack and added the sites to the system. Trouble is I can only seem to see their state in the report section.
But the bigger issue I am having is I have shut one of the sites down and it has yet to show it as going down.

I am a bit new to Zenoss, but am at a loss as to where to address this at.
By chance could someone perhaps pint me to some documentation on this?

Thanks

Carl

Hi Carl,
Depends a bit on exactly how you are monitoring these systems?

I tend to monitor webservers as Operating System devices first ie. put them under /Server/Linux or /Server/Windows or some subclass of these.  That gets you basic OS-type monitoring including ping availability and some OS-style monitoring.  The defaults for Unix/Linux type devices with SNMP support gives good support out-of-the-box; the Windows stuff is less good as some of the default performance templates assume you have the Informant MIB add-on installed on your Windows servers.  Most folk tend to replace this with Egor's excellent WMI Data Source and WMI Windows Performance ZenPacks.

On top of the OS monitoring, I then add the HttpMonitor template from the HTTP ZenPack.  All this does is gather data for the time to get the url and the size of the file returned.  There are no thresholds in this standard template so you probably won't see any error messages.  If the template fails entirely, you should see events of class /Status/HTTP but that's all.

Feel free to come back and probe further :)

Cheers,
Jane

Humm. Well I can’t seem to get it to work in either configuration.
For some reason I never seem to have a components section under the overview for that server or that webpage.

I have not configures SNMP yet on these servers, I am just trying to make sure a webpage is accessible. Nothing else. I have started reading eh book and after getting to page 97 I can tell I am very lost.

You shouldn't need to read that far!

2 options.  If you will ultimately want to monitor OS stuff, then it is worth getting the SNMP configured on your devices.  Especially for Linux / Unix systems, Zenoss uses this as the default option and, once you have SNMP access, lots falls straight out-of-the-box for you.  Without some OS monitoring, you won't have any components or much information on the Overview page for a device (like probably nothing).  I would at least suggest setting up a test device to see what you get - use the Zenoss Server itself if necessary - and you can always add the http monitor to monitor <zenoss server> on port 8080 (where Zenoss runs it's webserver for the GUI).

If you just want to start with the HttpMonitor template then I would start by:
1) Checking the template is applied to the relevant device - it should show at the bottom of the lefthand menu for each device under "Monitoring Templates".
2) Where the template is  bound and collecting successfully, the lefthand Graphs menu for a device should show graphs of size and time
3) Check the Events lefthand menu for a device - if there are problems gathering the HTTP info for a device, then you should see them there
4) To get a view of all devices with problems with HTTP access, bring up the Event Console (EVENTS top menu) and in the filter box under Event Class, type in /Status/HTTP - that's the event that should be generated for HTTP access problems.

But that's all you will get if the only way you have to talk to your devices is via HTTP and the HttpMonitor ZenPack.

Cheers,
Jane

OK I will just have to start over. Option 2 is not working. SNMP exactly how I wanted to chase this down, but looks like it is my only option.

Thanks
