Now I am learning the Zenoss. But I have some questions about monitoring log files. I have some applications that do not throw their errors in the the windows event log,so I need to poll the log files of the app every 5 minutes or so. Can Zenoss look for key words within txt or log files? Any suggestions on how to do that? Thank you!

You'd be better served by using a program that is designed to do that. You could install something like Epilog to turn the text logs into syslog messages to Zenoss...

Do you mean that if I want to monitor the log files about some applications with Zenoss, I should do the following steps. First, I should install something like Epilog which is designed to monitor the log files about some applications. Then, the Epilog will turn the text logs into syslog messages to Zenoss. Last, the Zenoss will generate some events.

Thank you!!

Yes, Zenoss can be a syslog collector - so if it recieved an event via syslog, it would turn that into a Zenoss event.

Hello,

I am a new user of zenoss and trying to develop an infrastructure on my own. Right now, my device is sending logs (cpu, timestamp, status, and similar other metrics) in the form of log. I really appreciate if you can help me how could I solve the following.

1) How to take those log files from another device  into my zenoss? Is there a place that I can create a test data and play?
2) I want to display stuff from my log files in the tabular format. Something like 4 or 5 columns and let go right data in right column. I have no clue on how to do this? Any DETAILED help please

Something like this format:
Loading Image...%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.kaushik.net%252Favinash%252Fsix-data-visualizations-that-rock%252F%3B478%3B320 https://www.google.com/search?q=metrics+in+table&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hl=en&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=YecLUYT9DuqdiAK3xYH4Cg&biw=1600&bih=752&sei=ZOcLUduUAeSJiALG8YDICw#imgrc=7Wj0yzUrLL8BNM%3A%3BRMPgYxZXtmwFmM%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.kaushik.net%252Favinash%252Fwp-content%252Fuploads%252F2007%252F06%252Fgoogle_analytics_keywords_table.png%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.kaushik.net%252Favinash%252Fsix-data-visualizations-that-rock%252F%3B478%3B320

3) My data keeps on changing. So I should be able to update/replace my data every 5 minutes in the table. How should I do that?

4) How should I bring that table in the portlet or my dashboard?

Again, I am learning and I appreciate anyhelp from this community.

Ask like Mike, the key problem is how to take those log files from another device  into my zenoss? You say that Epilog can turn the text logs into syslog messages to Zenoss. But I can't find something about the software. Can you tell me a link about it?
Thank you!!

5th result of google 'epilog' is:
http://www.intersectalliance.com/projects/EpilogWindows/ http://www.intersectalliance.com/projects/EpilogWindows/

I suggest you work on googlefu - it will make using zenos and OSS in general far easier.

How about ignoring epilog now? How can you set up a listening port on zenoss to get log files from snort/snorby and then map these files into events?

I don't use snort/snorby, so you'll have to figure that out yourself...

What do you mean by mapping a file into an event ?

Now, I have solved the problem. I installed the syslog-ng in the client. The syslog-ng is a powerful tool. I configure some related contents including some Regex. So the problem has been solved. But still appreciate your suggestion.
Thank you!!
