Hi, I am new to Zenoss.  I am trying to evaluate the product and have gone through the installation, both manual and utilizing the install script.  Both methods result in the following error, upon initial start up:

Ralph,

if you're going to start zenoss in that manner, please use the zenoss user.  Otherwise use the Zenoss init script by:,
<pre>
# /etc/init.d/zenoss start
</pre>

Hi Andrew,

Thanks for the reply.  I have tried that way also, that is the initial start process, as per the the installation guide:

as root
/sbin/service zenoss start (same as calling the init.d script)  see below output from both.

[root~]# /sbin/service zenoss start

Is the manual pre/post initialization process documented?  It may be worthwhile performing these tasks manually, in order to identify where the problem may reside.

would you please reply with output from the following?  I want to get some idea of your system setup:
# cat /etc/init.d/zenoss | grep "export ZENHOME"

# test -f /usr/bin/env && echo $?
(if you get a "0" as output here, please paste the output of the following)
# env

Hi Andrew,

Here's the output from the above.  Note, the zenoss db does not exist, since the pre & post initial scripts have not execute.  I created the zenoss user, in MySql, but not the db or tables, etc.

Thanks,
Ralph

Hi Ralph, I'm the maintainer of the core-autodeploy script.

I'd be interested in having you do a fresh install on a CentOS 6 system, with the auto-deploy script. The auto-deploy script is supposed to start Zenoss for you, so you should not need to start Zenoss manually. It appears that this did not happen, so I'd like to go to this point in the process and see if we can figure out what's going wrong. Just leave it in the state immediately after core-autodeploy completes -- don't try anything else -- and we'll do some root cause analysis while the system is in this state.

The process for core-autodeploy is that you run the script and when (if!) it completes successfully, you simply head to http://127.0.0.1:8080 http://127.0.0.1:8080 to continue configuration. If the system is rebooted, Zenoss will start automatically.

Sorry for the difficulty and it's my goal to have the auto-deploy script work 100% of the time, so I'm interested to find out what's going on and then fix it :)

Best Regards,

Daniel Robbins

Hi Daniel,

Unfortunately, my Linux install base is RHEL, we do not run / support CentOS.  This server is RHEL 5.5 and is fairly vanilla.  There is nothing else running on it, as it is an Admin server.

Thanks,
Ralph

Ralph, either RHEL or CentOS will work. If you can do a fresh install of the OS on a server, and then retry the auto-deploy script, that would be helpful in troubleshooting. I recommend RHEL6/CentOS6 if possible.

Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for the responses, unfortunately an OS reinstallation is not really feasible, the process to perform this task is extensive and not really an undertaking I am looking to take on.  I may have another VM I can utilize, but that may take some reseach.

Can you think of any alternatives to a fresh install?

Regards,
Ralph
