I have Zenoss community 3.1 installed on my site and it has worked properly for months.

Sudently it has stopped to send email notifications uppon alerts to users.

The test mail goes correctly out of the system to the users, so the mail delivery is not a problem.

I have upgraded to 3.2 and same issue with the system.

Does anyone have any clue about this suddent problem and were to look ?

Thanks,

Yannick

Assuming your problem isn't with how SMTP is configured because you got the test email I would start looking into the alerting rules that are supposed to send the email and/or the zenactions daemon.

Could it be that your alerting rules have been disabled for one reason or another?

Do your logs have any additional info?

Do you know how to increase the verbosity of your logs if needed?  Maybe it would be helpful to start the zenactions daemon with verbose logging and manually trigger an alert which should generate an email alert.  It may provide further clues.

# zenactions start now -v 10

Hope that helps.

Thanks johnynoc for your suggestion,

Looking in the log of the zenactions daemon shows that he has correctly decided to send the email :

+2011-10-05 18:22:40,669 INFO zen.ZenActions: rule 'default' sent email:[zenoss] Xerox ip 192.168.62.21 is down to:[ mailto:***@xxx.com ***@xxx.com']+

I do not see more info in debug mode.

I have also tested another email address (in case of spam analysis) but still same issue. Test mail is OK, but mail generated by actions is not received...

So it looks like Zenoss is sending the email.  Time to hop on your mail/smtp server and look at logs there to determine if an smtp connection was actually made from the zenoss server and of course to try and determine what happened to the email if it was indeed sent.

Could it be some overzealous spam filters?

So next step, I have monitored the SMTP trafic...

I'm able to see the mail going out when doing the test email (user section).
But nothing when processed by zenactions.
