Hey
I'm a complete newbie in Zenoss.
Just installed 4.2 on CentOS 6.3 using the auto deploy script
Have an alert "SNMP agent down - no response received" on localhost (the machine that zenoss is installed on)
Have no idea what to check next..

Searched the forums, Restarted the zenperfsnmp, but it didn't help..

Will appreciate any assistance.

Many thanks,

James,

You are receiving that alert because the snmp daemon (snmpd) is not running on the machine that zenoss is installed on. The autodeploy script doesn't install it.

I found http://community.zenoss.org/message/27005#27005 this post, which is old but will point you in the right direction!

Hey
Thanks for your reply.

I have snmpd installed
and already ran the snmpwalk on the localhost with zenoss user (and it works)
but the alert is still on.. :(

Any thoughts?

James,

Ahhhh ok, you need to change the SNMP community for localhost.

Click on localhost, go to the configuration properties..... from there you
can change the SNMP community and version to match what was used in your
snmpwalk

Hey

Well I've changed the settings as you suggested and the event disappeared .

But still there is no monitoring for localhost, no graphs / components..

I tried to rediscover the device (model device) but nothing changed.

In the device details there are: (look at Location & contacts)
%1,3% SNMP Location:
%1,3% Unknown (edit /etc/snmp/snmpd.conf)
%1,3% SNMP Contact:
%1,3% Root (configure /etc/snmp/snmp.local.conf)
%1,3% SNMP Description:
%1,3% Linux zenossintg.itstoffice.com 2.6.32-279.el6.x86_64 #1 SMP Fri Jun 22 12:19:21 UTC 2012 x86_64
%1,3% SNMP Community:
%1,3% public
%1,3% SNMP Version:
%1,3% v2c

I know I may just answered my question, But (and I'm sorry about the newbie question) - what exactly should I cahange in /etc/snmp/snmp.local.conf ?

The model device log:

James,

Open the device page (click on localhost) -> Click commands (bottom right) -> Click snmpwalk to see if that correctly polls the device.

Here is a very simple snmpd.conf you can experiment with. (I used 'snmpconf -g basic_setup' to create it)

#Sample snmpd.conf
#V1 Read Only community
rocommunity  test
syslocation  USA
syscontact  Tech123

[***@localhost ~]# snmpconf -g basic_setup
The following installed configuration files were found:

   1:  /etc/snmp/snmpd.conf
   2:  /etc/snmp/snmptrapd.conf

Would you like me to read them in?  Their content will be merged with the
output files created by this session.

Valid answer examples: "all", "none","3","1,2,5"

Read in which (default = all):

You are doing it correctly, but there are lots of options, as it's designed
to be flexible to meet your needs. Below are some basic instructions

snmpconf -g basic_setup
Choose 'none' on the merge question, this way it will be a fresh file
choose most of the default options #e.g. if you're not sure just hit enter
;)
Don't setup SNMP v3 or v2
Setup v1 read-only
give it a community name, example: dex-ro
when done it should prompt you to save the file
cp snmpd.conf /etc/snmp/snmpd.conf
then restart snmpd

Hi,

I am a complete newbie in Zenoss.
I also encountered the same issue encountered by James.

I already followed the instructions hydruid gave and still my SNMP agent is down. I have snmpd installed also I set up my snmpd using 'snmpconf -g basic_setup'.

The only difference I see between James case and mine is the following fields are not define on my end. Only SNMP Community and Version have value on my end.
%1,3% *SNMP Location:*
%1,3% *SNMP Contact:*
%1,3% *SNMP Description:*
%1,3% SNMP Community:
%1,3% Alnova
%1,3% SNMP Version:
%1,3% v2c

Please help. Thanks!

Hi Hydruid,

thank you for your quick response. Below is the copy of my snmpd config gile. I've also changed the version to v1 in zenoss.

#
# snmpd.conf
#
#   - created by the snmpconf configuration program
#

###########################################################################
# SECTION: Access Control Setup
#
#   This section defines who is allowed to talk to your running
#   snmp agent.
# rocommunity: a SNMPv1/SNMPv2c read-only access community name
#   arguments:  community [default|hostname|network/bits] [oid]
rocommunity  alnova

###########################################################################
# SECTION: System Information Setup
#
#   This section defines some of the information reported in
#   the "system" mib group in the mibII tree.
# syslocation: The [typically physical] location of the system.
#   Note that setting this value here means that when trying to
#   perform an snmp SET operation to the sysLocation.0 variable will make
#   the agent return the "notWritable" error code.  IE, including
#   this token in the snmpd.conf file will disable write access to
#   the variable.
#   arguments:  location_string
syslocation  madrid
# syscontact: The contact information for the administrator
#   Note that setting this value here means that when trying to
#   perform an snmp SET operation to the sysContact.0 variable will make
#   the agent return the "notWritable" error code.  IE, including
#   this token in the snmpd.conf file will disable write access to
#   the variable.
#   arguments:  contact_string
syscontact  root

Also, I couldn't find this file  */etc/snmp/snmp.local.conf*.

When I run snmpwalk in zenoss. I received this messge:

*snmpwalk -v1 -calnova udp6:::1 system*
*Timeout: No Response from udp6:::1*

I found out that the zenoss only listens to udp4.

Thanks!

Change the device's ip in Zenoss from the ipv6 address ( udp6:::1)  to the
ipv4 address, which will look similar to 172.16.5.21

Hi hydruid,

Thank you for your help!
The event log is now clear. I just indicate the IP address of the server in "Reset/Change IP address"

Thanks!
