Do you use Debian or Ubuntu? Do you want to use Zenoss Core 4 on Debian/Ubuntu? The Zenoss Inc commercial userbase is currently Red Hat biased, and Core 4 builds are out only for RHEL and derivitaves. The ZCA would like to provide a .deb build of v4, but needs experianced Debian / Ubuntu packagers to help us out.

Unfortunately I'm not an experienced packager, but I've been doing administration on Debian and Ubuntu for a few years now, and I'll be happy to help somehow (testing your builds?)

I've only ever applied the odd patch or tinkered with the depencies - never done anything from scratch.Â Would be willing to test / debug.

Would it be possible to release Zenoss Core 4 Alphas as just a tar ball - to enable people to start looking into this? It is unfortunate that only RPM and VMware images are currently available...

Our stack installers were built by a third party and were fairly complex to build, and we are not going in that direction. Right now we have an auto-deploy script for 4.2.0 which we will continue moving forward, which gives you a stack installer experience on RHEL/CentOS.

But that's only RHEL/CentOS -- going forward, as we start the true open source builds, we will offer a really nice experience on your favorite distros. This is all in the works, and our users and community developers will be a part of this process but not left to their own to try to get our builds to work on Debian, Ubuntu, Gentoo, etc. I don't think it's right to leave you guys figuring out how to build our software. So all this is coming.

If anyone is interested, as an alternative to the auto-installer, im working on updating the opscode chef zenoss cookbook to support core 4. If anyone is interested in this and/or interested in Beta testing it, let me know and I'll make some information available.

This should lend itself nicely if Zenoss Inc. does actually release native packages on alternate distros.

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for the info, it would be nice to have the Debian distro's support mainly due to what we're using in the office, although I have used it on Gentoo before, hence why the stack installer was great, because then it didn't care about what distro it was.

If the new installer will allow the ability to run on whatever distro we are using without it being distro-specific, that would be excellent.

Incidently, I tried using alien to get it working on Debian, but alas I wasn't successful, as a lot of things didn't quite work out.

As an aside, we will be holding if there is likely to be a Debian instance in about a month, and we'll more than gladly help with the testing side because we're wanting to upgrade our existing install - or alternatively migrate if a direct upgrade won't be possible for some reason.

Zenoss is going to start doing builds for distributions like Debian soon, as part of our community efforts. But these efforts will be supported by engineering. We will need some help but you guys will not need to be doing these builds on your own. We will be offering these builds from our community site.

I'm hoping to start this process around the 4.2.1 timeframe (month or so...)
