I've removed a network device from our zenoss device list however now when I add the device back in it's not listing the components within the device.  I've added back to the correct device type /Network/Router/Cisco but not getting any love back from the system.  Any idea what may be causing this?

Thanks,

Did you remodel it after re-adding it?

Yes, did that right after adding it back in and verifying that an SNMP walk was working

hmm maybe try
zenmodeler run -d <devicename> -v 10
I don't have any ideas aside from reviewing that output to see what might be up.

I ssh'd into the zenos box went to the /opt/zenoss/bin directory and ran the command but get back

./zenmodeler: line 13: /bin/zenfunctions: No such file or directory
./zenmodeler: line 20: generic: command not found

When I run the command by itself with no entries afterwards I get this.

[***@servername]# ./zenmodeler
./zenmodeler: line 13: /bin/zenfunctions: No such file or directory
./zenmodeler: line 20: generic: command not found

Am I missing something? Is there a way to run this from the web interface?

su - zenoss
You have to run it as the zenoss user

You should see the interfaces immediatly. It could take upwards of 20 minutes for graphs to populate depending on your setup.

Ok sorry for the late response, we decided to do a couple things late last night, 1. create a new clean zenoss server from scratch and manually add in each item.  Today we setup the cisco with an second acl to allow snmp traffic to a windows machine and used solarwinds instant banwidth tester to verify that it could see the interfaces and pull data from the (which it was sucessful). I circled back around to the new box and ran the zenmodeler command and below is the output of it.  I stopped it after a few seconds as everything was bascially the message with zen.twistedsnmp: reactor settings over and over.  This is a cisco 7606.  Again this was work at one point from and then stopped work when we were using the other system (vApp)  The second system is a Redhat system built from scratch.

I'm not to sure what the reactor settings message indicate, but the output above indicates the modeler IS making progress, and leads me to believe they are an indication of progress. I color coded where each plugin kicks in. My first reaction without seeing the completion of the output, is that you just didnt wait long enough during manual execution, but of course if the automatted runs are also not working, this is probably an incorrect assumption on my part :)

Is there any chance you could run the command again and just let it run for as long as it takes to complete and provide the full output. Also Can your run tcpdump and confirm that the communications are happening. I suspect they are, but perhaps the raw packets can tell the tell of what is happening during those twisted messages.

I've attached the full output of the zenmodeler.  I've removed/relabed all sensitive data that I found.  Let me know if this helps.

So it appears you might have missed the -d flag. This output actually seems to be the output of modeling all devices.
  ./zenmodeler run 10.10.10.253 -v 10
  ./zenmodeler run -d 10.10.10.253 -v 10
This second version will limit the output to ONLY the single device, helping to isolate the issues
2012-05-07 10:16:44,899 INFO zen.SnmpClient: Device timed out: SNMP info for 38.75.200.1 at 38.75.200.1:161 timeout: 2.5 tries: 2 version: v2c  community: 0**************
2012-05-07 10:16:44,899 INFO zen.SnmpClient: snmp client finished collection for 38.75.200.1
2012-05-07 10:16:44,899 WARNING zen.SnmpClient: Device 38.75.200.1 timed out: are your SNMP settings correct?
So something is up with SNMP connectivity with this device. If this is the problem child, we can start looking there.
In total I see 3 devices timed out:
10.10.10.12
38.75.200.1
38.75.200.2

Are those the devices having issues or is it 10.10.10.253 (which I suspect based on your command line arguments). Assuming is the 253, It appears that this IP is an interface IP on another device in the system, with an IP of 10.10.254.31 with an interface index of 129

Do you have the same device, but with different IPs added as different devices?

dpetzel, I'd like to start off by saying thank you for all the help you are providing me and sorry for missing the -d flag.  I re-ran the command from an ssh connection to the server and it runs for a short time and then knocks me off the server, I'm never able to get the full output.  I ran the command from the console of the VM and oddly enough at about the same place I lost vpn connection and had to log back in at which point the command had completed but I'm unable to grab the output.  I've tried sending the output to a text file however the file ends up being empty. (I must be missing something there).  Doing  ./zenmodeler run -d 10.10.10.253 -v 10 > /tmp/zenmodelertest
10.10.10.253 is the interface for the cisco router.  The other three addresses above are firewalls and other routers that we still need to configure for SNMP and are also having problems but haven't had time to troubleshoot.

I'm leaning to this being a configuration on the cisco router and not zenoss as it's able to perform modeling properly on our broacade environement and previously was susccessful with the cisco.  Are there any log files on the zenoss server I can look at that would point me in the correct direction.  Do you happen to know what settings are needed on the cisco router to allow proper SNMP walks and modeling of the router?   How can I get the output to properly redirect to a file?

Again thanks for helping me with this issue.

So I was finally able to work with the Network Engineer and it looks as though the Modeler was choking on all the route entries on the router.  (We suspect that when we first deployed there weren't that many routes on the new routers which is why it worked the first time) After being online for a little while the route tables grew to over 400,000 entries.  We removed the routemap module and it was able to complete the modeling.  The problem is now it doesn't have any of the internal routes listed.  Is there a way to make is so that it doesn't try to model all external routes and just the internal routes?

Thanks,

Hi Roy,
There are 3 configuration properties (also known as zProperties) that you can configure either for device classes or for specific devices.  Bring up the Configuration Properties lefthand menu (follow the DETAILS link at the top of the lefthand menu if you are configuring a device class).  You have the following (with their defaults):

zRouteMapCollectOnlyIndirect                    False
zRouteMapCollectOnlyLocal                        False
zRouteMapMaxRoutes                                500

Does that fitr the bill fory ou?

Cheers,
Jane

How soon after doing a remodeling show the graphs and interface show up?  Is it within a few minutes or a few hours?

Typically it tends to take 2 polling intervals before graphs show up.  SNMP default polling is 5 mins.  You shouldn't need to wait hours.

Have you changed anything in the performance template or have you changed the SNMP performance collector 5-minute default?  Either would mess up the underlying data collection files.  If you don't have any serious data yet, open a commandwindow and navigate to $ZENHOME/perf/Devices . There should be a directory for each of your devices collecting performance data, probably with an os/interfaces subdirectory hierarchy under each device.  See if you actually have any data files down there.

Cheers,
Jane

Jane,

I haven't made any changes to the performance template.

Within the local Cisco router I've reconfigured the zProperties you mention above to enabled them to true as well as various combinations of true and false, added back in the zenoss.snmp.routemap modeler plugin but it still hangs and doesn't completed the modeling, if I remove the zenoss.snmp.routemap modeler plugin on the device the modeling completes succesfully in about 1.93 seconds. Could I be missing a step?

I don't think you should need to,but...
On a sample router, use the Action icon to "Push Changes".

What are your zProperty settings currently at?  I am guessing that you may have very many indirect routes??

You can also run zenmodeler just for a single modeler plugin, for a single device so, as the zenoss user, try:

zenmodeler run -v 10 -d 10.10.10.253 --collect routemap

I guess the other thing you might do to see the raw data that we need to get, is to use snmpwalk.  I think it will be the ip table you want for the routes so try:
snmpwalk -v <your snmp version> -c <your community> 10.10.10.253 ip

The version will probably be either 1 or 2c.  You could direct the output to a file and then we can see the real scale of the problem.

Cheers,
Jane
