Hello there

Just wondered if anyone had any ideas, I am really stuck on this one in the past the forums have been very helpful but of late the responses are few and far between. I know its voluntary so I am not complianing but is there no engineers from Zenoss supporting the system at the moment?

Hi Nathan,
You say that a manual backup runs fine????  Is your /tmp plenty bigger than the size of your backup??  I have been caught several times on backups because zenbackup actually creates the backup in /tmp and then only right at the end does it get moved to $ZENHOME/backups.  If the temp-dir hasn't enough space then it just fails.  You can specify a temporary directory as part of the zenbackup if you are tight in /tmp.  My zenbackup looks like:

zenbackup --save-mysql-access --temp-dir=/tmp

Obviously your --temp-dir can be wherever you want that there is space.

What does you /tmp/backup.log show?

Cheers,
Jane

Hi Jane

Thanks for the replie (much appreciatted), I did notice that, in fact the /tmp keeps filling with the backups and then I have to mannually delete them every so often to stop the disk filling.

There is plenty of space for a few failed backups but it appears once the files are copied to /tmp/zenoss it then tars them and copies them to the /opt/zenoss/backups directory this is where it appears to failover.

I have checked the BACK_DIR switch is correct in the cron script

export BACKUP_DIR="/opt/zenoss/backups"

As I said previously though I can't find an error in a log to help me :((

You shouldn't need to specify a backup dir - and in fact you don't on your zenbackup line - the default is $ZENHOME/backups as you have.  It does look like you have made changes in this area though - worth triple-checking it, or take that variable out altogether.

It looks like your crontab is for the zenoss user which is correct.  The script run by cron is under /scripts - is this correct?  Does the zenoss user have authority to run that script?

Is there anything in /tmp/backup.log???  Who owns /tmp/backup.log?

Cheers,
Jane

Do you have the luxury of a big piece of disk space you could use for temp-dir?? Could you try this with the --temp-dir parameter on zenbackup, pointing at somewhere with PLENTY of space.  If this is the issue, it is usually backing up rrd files where it happens.

Can you checkout the temporary directory whilst the backup is being created?  It should currently be the newest directory under /tmp.

I think you said originally that this worked from cron?  I guess the other obvious question is "what's changed?".

Not sure what else to suggest.

Cheers,
Jane
