It sounds like the environment didnt get properly setup. Perhaps during the manual install? Is it possible for your to clean up the existing stuff, and attempt the scripted install again?

Try becoming the zenoss user and see if ZENHOME gets set... use that value to modify the init scripts.

The zenoss user has not been setup yet

I checked mysql for databases

From what I have found:

1- tried reinstall from fresh new installation of centos 6.3   64bit on R310    script runs   noticed that when the script was running some yumlock msg's came up   Id did not create the DB   and the ZENHOME issue repeats  http://community.zenoss.org/people/dpetzel *dpetzel*

2- I logged into the 2nd setup that I created   as root then  su - zenoss

to start services I have to enter a password       I do not have the zenss password  and I am not sure if I change it if it will cause other issues when zenoss is running

Can you advise the location and the names of the init scripts to check?

Few suggestions for you to try.

In order to make sure zenoss user has been created, at the server console or through a SS session, run the following command :    *cat /etc/passwd | grep "zenoss"*. If you don't get any reply, zenoss user has not been created and you may force its creation running as root user the following command    *useradd -m zenoss*.
Other suggestion, setup *sudo* so you can be able to run    *sudo su - zenoss*   using your password instead of zenoss password.

Hope that will help

Hi Nillie

the account is there

[***@Muon-Z ~]# cat /etc/passwd |grep "zenoss"
zenoss:x:1337:500:Zenoss Account:/home/zenoss:/bin/bash
[***@Muon-Z ~]#

The main issue is that I cannot start the zenoss service     I get

ZENHOME not set. You must run this script as the zenoss user.
ZENHOME not set. You must run this script as the zenoss user.
(from above)

Do you know which init files I should check,. or do you have a better solution to get the Zenoss to work?

Can I change the zenoss user (linux)  password with causing issues in zenoss core or do you know the password?

Thanks

Christopher

You are right, it is not a good idea to reset the password for zenoss account. What I'm doing is using sudo to allow me to just type  *sudo su - zenoss*  and be logged in as user zenoss after being prompted for my own password. Read the man pages for sudo and sudoers and use visudo to modify the /etc/sudoers file (it should be something like adding the line   *+your_user+ ALL = /bin/su - zenoss* ).
As for starting the zenoss service or any other service, you should do this as root or using the root password with su and certainly not under a regular user account as is the case for zenoss. By default, only root has the necessary privileges to start/stop services.
I've just installed Zenoss Core v4.2 on CentOS v6.3 manually (using rpm not the script) following the documentation and apart from some minor modifications related to Java and MySQL installation, everything went ok. I can start zenoss service as root witho no error message.
If you want to dig into zenoss init scripts on CentOS I would suggest you to start with */etc/init.d/zenoss*

Hi Nillie and everyone who replied

I was able to solve the issue

With centos 6 and up, they give you a number of configurations to load   workstation, server, etc....   I went into the code for the different configuration installs and after reviewing the zenoss script, the manual install, and some of the CentOS source code   found that the Centos setup was the issue as i did the install as a SERVER (security reasons)  and not a WEB SERVER.  The 2nd item that I had to correct was te selinux. This was an easy fix  by editing the /etc/sysconfig/selinux  file by setting SELINUX=disabled.  It was as simple as that. I hope this will help any others that come accross this type of issue

I used the SERVER option myself during the initial setup for CentOS and Zenoss installed just fine so I guess the SELINUX setting was causing all the trouble. It never crossed my mind this could be the issue since disabling SELINUX is marked as a pre-requisite in the installation guide and I assumed you did it.
Anyway I'm glad to hear you solved the problem.

I ran into this same thing...

I turns out that there were bits and pieces of .login and .bashrc in /home/zenoss that tripped up the automated install when it "su-ed" to the zenoss user.  It also tripped up the /etc/init.d/zenoss script.

Once I renamed the /home/zenoss user directory and reran the automated script everything worked fine....
