Hi. I'm bumping up this thread, I'm trying to write a Puppet module to install zenoss-stack via apt, but to make it clean I need a publicly available apt key of the repository. Google seems to be not very helpful so far...
Thanks

I can't really help with your specific request, but I think it may be useful to know that Zenoss 4 when released will not be a stack release, and may not support Debian.

Hey if you use these repository(see below) u will no have issues with key, the repo is on the installation guide.

5.2.1. Using apt (Command Line)
1. Add the Zenoss repository to the /etc/apt/sources.list file. Add the following line at the bottom of the file:
# Zenoss repository
     deb http://dev.zenoss.org/deb http://dev.zenoss.org/deb main stable
2. Enter the following commands:
apt-get update
apt-cache search zenoss-stack
This should return:
zenoss-stack - Zenoss Stack with all requirements.
3. Enter this command to install the Zenoss stack:
apt-get install zenoss-stack
Zenoss is installed in the /usr/local/zenoss directory.
4. Start Zenoss with this command:
# /etc/init.d/zenoss-stack start

--------------------
PD: there is not more debian supported zenoss stack or there no will be more zenoss-stack at all?

As far as I am aware, Debian is not a planned platform for the Core 4 release. I'd suspect with a enough community pushback it could be, but as of right now I believe it is planned to be RHEL5 variants only.

The ZCA is working with Zenoss to see if we can get a community effort on packaging for platforms other than Red Hat EL5 derivatives, but I don't currently know how successful we'll be. It's not easy to build. It's also going to be a bit of a new model, Community CORE builds - so I'm not sure how "official" they'll be.

Hi,

This is a little off topic, but both you and dpetzel above mentioned RHEL5; which makes one ask,

Really?

According to http://dev.zenoss.org/trac/roadmap http://dev.zenoss.org/trac/roadmap, RHEL6 will be 18 months old by the time Core 4 is released; further, RHEL5 is due to have some support removed already in Q4 2012.

Ubuntu/Debian support aside, targeting RHEL5 (rather than RHEL6) for a new release seems strange.

jmp242, this is great news indeed.

I've never installed zenoss-core other than using the stack, and I don't see any "src" package on the sourceforge page... how hard is to get zenoss core running from SVN sources? Any document describing steps involved?

Alexander, you can certainly pull the source from SVN. I am not aware of any official docs for 4x, but here was the one from 3.2.1: http://dev.zenoss.com/trac/browser/tags/zenoss-3.2.1/inst/docs/INSTALL_Source.txt http://dev.zenoss.com/trac/browser/tags/zenoss-3.2.1/inst/docs/INSTALL_Source.txt

That said, I've made some vein attempts at getting core 4 to install from source on both rhel5 and rhel6 without success. (I'm not much of a linux guy, so it could be myown shortcomings).

If your able to get it to install, I'd be very instereted in documentating the steps.

dpetzel, I'm supposed to be a linux guy, but I've never been very good at documenting :) Anyway, I'll try to dedicate sometime to the task and, if I manage to find some, I'll document the steps required (or better, write a Puppet module and push it to Github)

Alexander,

The source is available on Sourceforge -- it's the file with the .tar.gz suffix. Given that there's also .app.tar.gz for the mac, it could be nice of Zenoss to name it something like "zenoss-3.2.1-src.tar.gz", but it is available.

W.r.t. getting it running, that's what the community is for... e.g. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Zenoss https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Zenoss (talks about "dapper", which is a pretty old Ubuntu) or http://www.jacovosloo.info/blog/IT/zenossonubuntu1004howto http://www.jacovosloo.info/blog/IT/zenossonubuntu1004howto (for Ubuntu 10.04, the latest Ubuntu LTS version. A new Ubuntu LTS is expected in April).

Hi Shai. I'm struggling trying to find where the apha source lives. I can't find any .tar.gz file in the sourceforge file section:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/zenoss/files/zenoss-alpha/4.1.70-1468/ http://sourceforge.net/projects/zenoss/files/zenoss-alpha/4.1.70-1468/

Seems that development has switched to Github too, and SVN Sourceforge repository is quite outdated:

# svn log -r HEAD https://zenoss.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/zenoss/ https://zenoss.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/zenoss/
------------------------------------------------------------------------
r7979 | zenoss-svn-sync | 2011-01-28 23:30:16 +0000 (Fri, 28 Jan 2011) | 1 line

but I wasn't able to find any "core" public project on https://github.com/zenoss/repositories https://github.com/zenoss/repositories

UPDATE: Thanks to rmatte, I've found the alpha repository:
svn co http://dev.zenoss.org/svn/trunk http://dev.zenoss.org/svn/trunk

Hi Juan, actually that's the repository I'm using. AFAIK, if you use non-Debian / non-Ubuntu apt repository, you have to add the repository key in order to avoid to type "Yes" once you install zenoss-stack (or to disable that check globally into apt configuration).

Its a shame that there will no be support for debian based distro! but at least we have the source there is not problem, back at the main topic of the post, i cheked the key that u said right there, the only thing that i will recomend, its download the .bin file and make the comparison of the sumcheck and ur good to go,even i think it's that is unnecessary

Just to clarify -- since I missed it as well the first time, and Juan, correct me if I'm wrong --

Juan claims that the Deb packages are signed with the same key as the RPM packages; this key is available at http://dev.zenoss.org/yum/RPM-GPG-KEY-zenoss http://dev.zenoss.org/yum/RPM-GPG-KEY-zenoss.

I don't have time or means to verify this at the moment.

Juan, given that there'll be no zenoss-stack (and no apt repository) in the future, I've dropped the idea of using it.

I still have to decide with way to go, one between automating the checkout of the source (if possible/viable),wait for someone to package it, or create a deb package by myself and host it somewhere.

No! shai! im saying that Maybe the .deb packages are signed by that key, i wont test it anyway (I dont know how) rather than that, u could download .bin files and make the checksum test

#md5sum zenoss-stack-3.2.1-linux-x64.bin
the output
80f6a194fb1e47ee434d4475f9ea6bb1  zenoss-stack-3.2.1-linux-x64.bin

Or!
Download the checksum file here http://downloads.sourceforge.net/zenoss/md5sums_core_3.2.1.txt http://downloads.sourceforge.net/zenoss/md5sums_core_3.2.1.txt
and do

#md5sum -c md5sums_core_3.2.1.txt
The output
zenoss-stack-3.2.1-linux-x64.bin: La suma coincide

I tought that following that could work but it does not!

Apt-key import
http://blog.edseek.com/archives/2007/03/17/apt-key-gpg-key-import-on-ubuntu-and-debian/ http://blog.edseek.com/archives/2007/03/17/apt-key-gpg-key-import-on-ubuntu-and-debian/
